Decreased libido, vaginal dryness, and painful sex is a common complaint of clients seeking hormone optimization.  There are natural changes in our physiology as we approach perimenopause that contribute to this change; however, what we are finding is that the impact of certain medications can have a direct impact on these issues.  In fact, research has found that oral birth control can cause a change in libido long after discontinuing.

SBGH Binds Up “Free Testosterone”  . . . Decreasing Libido

Researchers have published research measuring sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) before and after discontinuation of the oral contraceptive pill. The research, which appeared in the January 2006 issue of The Journal of Sexual Medicine, concluded that women who used the oral contraceptive pill may be exposed to long-term problems from low values of “unbound” testosterone, also called “free testosterone” potentially leading to continuing sexual, metabolic, and mental health consequences.

As Goes The Free T . . . So Goes the Libido.

When Free Testosterone decreases, so does libido.   That’s it.

If oral contraceptives have been used, then the testosterone production can be normal but the increased SBGH binds to the Free Testosterone.  When SHBG binds up the Free Testosterone, it has the same result of having no testosterone.  Libido decreases, mental focus wanes, energy drops, and chaos can ensue.  One of the reasons that testosterone is more commonly prescribed for women is a direct effect of the increased SBGH.
