Men who sleep less than five hours a night only one week experience significant decreases in testosterone, according to a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA). Eve Van Cauter, PhD, study director and professor in medicine, shared, “As research progresses, low sleep duration and poor sleep quality are increasingly recognized as endocrine disruptors.” (Science Daily)

The study featured ten young men recruited from the University of Chicago. Study results revealed that the young men who experienced the sleep deprivation suffered the same level of decreased testosterone as if they’d aged 10 to 15 years. (AAAS)

Testosterone production tends to decrease at a rate of 1 to 2% every year as men age. Known symptoms of low testosterone include decreased sense of well-being, low libido, decreased muscle strength and mass, increased abdominal fat, and lack of concentration. This study highlights the importance of a regular good night’s sleep in supporting healthy testosterone production.
