What is menopause?

Menopause marks the end of a woman’s child-bearing years, and her menstrual cycle stops completely. This change varies greatly from woman to woman, occurring from their 30s to their 60s. Menopause, and the lead-up known as perimenopause, usually takes several years from start to finish.

When you go through this change in your life, you go through three separate stages: perimenopause, menopause, and post-menopause. Menopause arrives when you go without a period for 12 consecutive months.

That distinction is important because sometimes you’ll go months without a period, only to get it again. This is common, and the reason menopause takes so many years to complete.

Symptoms can vary depending on the individual and their stage of menopause, but one of the most unwanted side effects of menopause is weight gain. This excess weight can be hard for you to lose, no matter how much exercise you do. However, knowing your risks and tackling them early on can help you shed the pounds — or avoid them all together.

Unfortunately, there’s no crystal ball that can tell you if you’ll gain weight during menopause, but some factors play a role in your chances. These factors can include:

  • Decrease carbohydrates
  • Manage your symptoms
  • Eat fewer calories
  • Strengthen your muscles

Getting enough rest is also an important factor in weight gain. Try to relax and get your symptoms under control to keep yourself as healthy as possible. Adding fiber can also help you kick those extra pounds to the curb.
