Polycystic ovary syndrome, or PCOS, affects as many as 1 out of 10 women of childbearing age. Benign ovarian cysts are the most noticeable sign of PCOS, but many women suffer from PCOS without knowing their true condition. What may appear to be a series of unrelated experiences or symptoms may be a sign of a more serious problem.
Symptoms of PCOS
Beyond ovarian cysts, there are several other symptoms that can manifest from Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. Women who suffer from PCOS report the following symptoms, among others:
- Infertility – PCOS is the most common cause of female infertility (Women’s Health). If you are experiencing difficulty conceiving, you may want to consider PCOS as the sole reason. PCOS prevents ovaries from producing the necessary levels of hormones, namely progesterone, to release an egg.
- Irregular, infrequent, abnormal, or even absent menstrual periods – A telling sign of irregular periods may be the thickening of your endometrium (the lining of your womb). A simple sonogram (vaginal ultrasound) can reveal whether PCOS may be affecting your reproductive system.
- Hirsutism – Increased hair growth on face, back, stomach, or chest
- Male-pattern baldness or thinning hair
- Sleep apnea
- Significant weight gain, sometimes to the point of obesity
- Pelvic discomfort or pain
- Anxiety or depression
The symptoms of PCOS are your body’s way of saying you need treatment. Leaving PCOS untreated can lead to a series of far more serious, even deadly, health complications, including stroke, heart attack, and cancer.
