Menopause can cause noticeable, sometimes uncomfortable changes in our bodies. Hot flashes, night sweats, and a burning sensation or discomfort during intimacy are all well-known symptoms of menopause, but what about our teeth and gums? What many women don’t realize is that their teeth and gums become a battleground during and after menopause.
Did you know that gingivitis (gum disease) is seven times more likely to affect postmenopausal men than men of similar ages? (NCBI) If left untreated, gingivitis can escalate into a far more serious condition called periodontitis, an inflammatory condition that reduces gum health and loosens teeth. (Source) Osteoporosis (a thinning of bone density and bone health) can dramatically affect the strength of your teeth and jawbone. Also, approximately 15% of menopausal or postmenopausal women in the U.S. report a burning sensation in their mouth, aptly labelled “burning mouth syndrome”. (Source)
While many women know their oral health is at risk or even being affected during menopause, we often don’t know how to best combat the symptoms. The best way to protect against the effects of menopause on your teeth and gums is to practice healthy oral hygiene.
- Brush your teeth twice a day (morning and evening, in particular).
- Floss or use a waterpik to supplement your oral hygiene regimen.
- Consult with your dentist on any concerning areas in your teeth or gums.
- Be aware of any family history of gingivitis, periodontitis, or osteoporosis.
