Diet Changes To Help Ease The Effects Of Menopause

As our bodies age, we need to adjust some of our diet to better fuel our bodies with each new season of life. Research shows certain types of food and drinks can help mitigate the effects of hormonal changes and aging during menopause.

Foods that can affect menopause

Spicy foods

Hot flashes are some of the most notorious symptoms of menopause. Eating spicy foods can increase your body’s core temperature, which your body will be naturally doing during hot flashes. Eat less spicy food or at least a smaller amount of spicy food to help maintain a cooler core body temperature.

Fatty meats

Studies show that women entering menopause can gain between 8 and 15 pounds in the first two years. Substitute leaner cuts of meat, like grilled chicken breast, in place of bacon or brisket.

Refined Carbs

Pasta, rice, white bread, corn, and potatoes can all be contributors to menopausal symptoms, such as mood swings and fatigue. Replacing refined carbs with whole wheat is a good place to start. Limiting your portion intake of refined carbs is another excellent solution.

Drinks that can affect menopause

Caffeine

The Menopause journal recently reported a study showing that women who consume caffeine are more likely to have hot flashes. (Menopause) Hot tea, particularly caffeine-free ginger or mint tea, is a good substitute for a morning cup of coffee. If you still crave the taste of coffee, switching to decaffeinated is at least a start.

Alcohol

A glass of Norton with the girls once in awhile is perfectly fine. However, consuming two or more drinks of alcohol a day are extra calories that can cause fatigue and mood swings. Diluting your drink like a wine spritzer is a good way to limit your caloric intake while keeping your body at peace.

There are also some added risks associated with alcohol consumption and breast cancer. The North American Menopause Society reports that women who consume between two and five alcoholic drinks a day are 1.5 times more likely to contract breast cancer as non-drinkers.
